Bob, thinking about getting a Windows Mobile smartphone and was wondering how IW ran on these devices. Are there any that you have tested the application on? Which one would you recommend?

Clayton,

You know the difference, but for the benefit of other inspectors who may read this ... a smartphone is a cell phone with some smarts built in. The only way the inspector works with it is by hitting the buttons on the phone. A PocketPC with a phone built-in is NOT a smartphone.

IW runs great on Windows Mobile. The OS is the important part.

But the form factor is another story. From a usability standpoint, I don't recommend a smartphone at all because 1) the interface doesn't support a stylus, only a keyboard and 2) the screen size is too small.

You'd have a lot of extra work scrolling through screens and hitting the up/down button to move through choices instead of hitting a single choice.

Different story on PDA with a phone built-in. As long as the screen size is 480x640, you'll be in great shape.

HTH,

Thanks for the info Bob, Since I already own a copy of IW for the Palm OS, will I need to purchase a copy that will work on Windows Mobile? Also, will there be any issues with the desktop app converting?

No need to give us any more money. Once a customer, always a customer. The newest version of IW will not cost you (or any other customer) a penny. There's never a charge for an upgrade, even when you're changing hardware.

And no, you won't have any issues with the desktop. That part remains the same. Holler when you're ready and I'll send you a link to the upgrade.

Just a follow up for any readers ... Clayton and I talked off line about this and IW is running excellently on his Cingular 8525.
